When it comes to the summer to fall/winter transition, there are so many changes that occur. From putting away our flip flops to pulling out our flip-flops, the new, cooler season brings with it plenty of changes and new requirements, especially when it comes to health and beauty. Your skin isn’t an exception to this seasonal transition, so be sure to consider these 5 tips to get your skin winter ready.

1. Exfoliate

While it may seem like the opposite of what your skin needs, the fall and winter seasons bring with them harsher, drier air that can result in a greater buildup of dead skin cells on our stratum corneum, the outermost layer of our skin. One of the best ways to battle this buildup, renew your natural glow, and increase the effectiveness of your skincare products is to add an exfoliating scrub into your skincare regime 2-3 times/week.

2. Boost Your Moisturizer

Because the air is much more moist during summer, we often use a lighter moisturizer over this season and require less of it. But now that fall has arrived and winter is just around the corner, be sure to boost your moisturizer: where more of it, apply it more frequently, and consider adding in a more concentrated day/night moisturizer.

3. Wash with Lukewarm Water

It can feel like the nicest thing in the world to have a hot shower when it’s cold outside, but watch out as watching your face with water that is too hot can result in negative effects, from redness to dryness. To be safe, wash your face with lukewarm water.

4. Have a Steam

With that being said, having a nice steam (perhaps from a hot bath) without actually wetting your face with scorching water can be a great way to open up your pores – which will then allow your skin to breathe and allow any imperfections to heal faster. Just be sure to follow up with a good toner and moisturizer.

5. Keep the SPF

Just because you can’t see the sun as much doesn’t mean that harmful UV rays don’t exist during the fall and winter. One of our best tips to keep your skin fall and winter ready is to avoid putting away this summer necessity and continue using a daily SPF throughout the colder seasons.

There you have it: five tips to get your skin winter ready that will also have you feeling much more prepared to battle – and conquer! – the cold seasons this year.
